Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.

Man, when I saw Alexis, I was judging.

She looked mean, barking away as I was checking out new rental Table on the Maya Express I was thinking of moving to.

I found out quickly, I was wrong about who she was.

Eventually every day when I came home from work, it wasn’t my kids, my spouse, or my own puppies that ran to greet me first.

Nope I was greeted by Alexis as I got out of my car.

Everyday walk over to the fence kisses and talk to her, until she starts eating the weeds in between our fences that mom forbids her from eating.

I wondered if she really loved giving me kisses or sneaking flowers and weeds nibbles, she couldn’t get otherwise. I like to think maybe a little bit of both.

Here is how her and her hooman Elizabeth met each other. I hope you enjoy their story as well…

I was in IndyVet one afternoon with Sultan for him to donate blood. While I was waiting for him, someone came out to leave with the happiest little pittie. Initially all I saw was a white and tan blur because she was moving so quickly to see and sniff everything she could.  She was excited to see any person and was a complete ball of energy.  She was adorable and a very happy girl. I immediately fell in love.

On the way out, the lady with her, told someone “she isn’t her dog but she is available for adoption”.

That definitely caught my attention and I couldn’t stop thinking about her as I sat there waiting for Sultan to return. I went to the desk and asked about the dog and what adoption group to contact.

It was Casa Del Toro, a rescue group with which some of my friends were associated. So, I reached out to speak with them and went online that night to complete the application.

The process was long.

It took about 4 months because she didn’t want anything to do with Sultan at first, but with what happened to her it was understandable. We met at parks every week to get Sultan and Alexis together and familiar with each other.

Along the way we learned a lot about Alexis and some more information about her past – what she endured is not okay and she is lucky to have survived.

None of us had any idea of her learning capacity or retention due to her abuse.

It didn’t matter. I knew she was meant to be with me the moment I saw her.

There were home visits, family visits, and eventually an overnight.

Once the overnight happened, she never left. It was perfect. She was home and we all knew it. 💜

Sadly December 26th, 2023, Alexis moved on to her next train cart on the Maya Express. The soul that was found beneath the cover of the book I judged, was beautiful and will be missed by many.

I hope someday our souls meet up again as we travel along our Spiritual Paths.

Yours Forever Grateful, & Elizabeth and Alexis.
